I guess that the reason why we spend a lot of time in school studying out of history books is so that we can learn from them. Learn so that we know the direction that we need to continue to follow, learn so that we can improve, learn so that we don't make the same mistakes as those before us. And how is all of this knowledge recorded? Through the written word. Even technology with all of its recent advances hasn't been able to replace that. So it stands to reason that in order to learn from one's own past, so that he/she may be able to more accurately see the future, there is a need to write things down and I suppose that is to be the reason for my blog. I have dreams and goals just like everyone should have and I hope that through some of my musings here on this blog that I'll be able to help at least someone, even if that someone happens to only be myself. And so here we go!

Bryson, the insight you have on how we gain knowledge is very interesting and intriguing. The question I have is what do you mean by the written word? Does that mean we can only remember things if we write them down? Do you think technology can be a form of the written word? For instance, Microsoft Word, Adobe, Blogs, Facebook, Youtube (recordings), Twitter, etc.
ReplyDeleteI do know that when we record things we leave a trail. Especially on the internet. Putting something on the internet will stay on the internet forever. I like to use technology to write my written word sometimes, on the other hand I do like writing by hand. I see the benefits. For instance, writing things down always helps me to accomplish a task. I have tried multiple ways to write a list of things to do on a computer. I have always failed to accomplish the task. Whereas, when I write a written task list by hand I can always carry the paper with me. I can pull the paper out randomly and see what I need to do to accomplish the next task or another task. By writing a list I can finish what I need to do.
I do like that there is a written record. The written record tells us history. We study history, cultures, and people to learn from them. Without this written record we would not be able to learn from the mistakes of others.
Hi Valeri,
DeleteI absolutely believe that technology is a form of the written word, hence my trying to make something out of this blog post rather than recording it all down in a more "physical" journal, though I do not demerit that either. I guess to be a little more specific I just mean making the effort to record things that happen in our lives in such a way that can be understood by many people and that way is through the use of writing, whether it be through electronic or simpler means. I'm very good when it comes to being vague haha but I think that just having something recorded helps us to remember it accurately, this then allows us to be able to reflect and learn from the past.
Thanks so much for your post!
A first step. Super insightful. Don't well all need to make a first step a some point in our lives? Even multiple first steps. It sounds like this will become an interactive blog, almost like a tour, of your life and how you get close and closer to your goals and dreams. Can't wait to read more!
ReplyDeleteHi Andres!
